| Psalidi is basically a beach resort of Kos Town, situated approx 3.5km to the East on the road that leads to Aghios Fokas and Embros Thermi. What the visitor will find in this area are large hotel complexes with good facilities, and with excellent cheap transport links to Kos Town. You do get the best of both worlds, sun yourself on a sunbed or souvenir hunt in the day and enjoy excellent bars and clubs at night in town in Kos. Psalidi does have a few shops and bars of its own. Also a few traditional tavernas were you can wet your whistle or maybe quall those hunger pangs with a freshly caught fish dish or traditional Greek meal.
Access to the beach is by way of some very steep pathways. The beach isn’t up to much, a bit of sand but mostly shingle and pebbles it is however very well organised with sunbeds, brollies, showers and toilets. The best area is known as Blue Beach, where there is a pleasant grassy area on which to sunbathe. This as got to be one of the best areas on Kos for all types of watersports. There’s a windsurfing school, with board rental, water-skiing, sailing, jet-ski, pedalo, and canoeing. The Imperial Water sports and Windsurf Club cater for all ages and skill levels whether you just want a bit of fun or participate at a serious sports level. Psalidi also plays home to a wetland area, a place of unique natural beauty. A place of peacefulness where you can experience contact with nature in its unspoilt state, see rare birds and plants that have disappeared from other places. Until 2005 this area was considered culturally unimportant, but during excavation works at a plot next to a hotel, a temple, (42X27 feet) was unearthed! Additional buildings were found as well. The temple was dedicated to a so far unknown god, but it was found that it was in use from the 13th to the 6th centuries B.C. Some 150 clay idols depicting animal forms were found at the site: their torsos, richly ornamented, were made on a potter’s wheel, as were their added feet, while their necks, heads, horns and tails were hand made. These idols make researchers believe that this Sanctuary may have belonged to a great feminine deity. Excavations continue and the temple will eventually be opened to the public. Apart from the steep beach access Psalidi if you like luxury hotel accommodation could well be your ideal Kos destination. |
