| Platani can be found approx 2 miles south of Kos Town, on the road that will take you to the Asklepeion. It’s a very beautiful old fashioned village packed with lush green pine trees.
Until 1964 the village was known as Kermetes, a Turkish name. It had a Turkish school, shops and a Mosque. However, when the Cyprus situation suddenly developed the school was converted to "Greek only", the village was renamed and many of its residents uprooted and relocated elsewhere on Kos or returned to their homeland. The beautiful minaret of the mosque that remains is worth a visit and many visitors like to visit the Jewish cemetery to pay their respects to those lost in the holocaust. Platani has a very nice beach in a relaxing bay, offering gorgeous panoramic views. It’s also close to the Asklepion which was originally a Spa resort. Due to earthquakes not much remains of the three temples but is worth a visit just to experience the ambiance of a bygone era. If you get hungry on your travels it has some traditional taverns, cafes and a few Turkish restaurants which serve quite excellent food. This is most definitely not a “clubbers” paradise though there are a couple if you fancy a night out. Access to the village is very easy public buses run very frequently, you could take a taxi, or reach the village by rented or private car and motorbikes, or for the fit amongst us you could hire a bicycle. This is a very quiet area ideal to use as a base to visit the rest of Kos, if peace and quiet is more you holiday style. |
