| Marmari is approx 14km from Kos Town. The most notable features of this resort are the salt pans, the amazing sand dunes, and the fact it’s basically manmade. If you love being more self contained but still with great hotel facilities this is the place for you. This is hotel resort bungalow city.
The sand dunes are created by the strong Meltemi wind which whips in from the ocean, known by the old Greeks as the Etesian northern winds. You can expect it to be at its strongest during July and August. Usually the wind starts in the early afternoon and dies out at sun set. However, it doesn’t always die; sometimes the effect can last for nine or ten days. If you own or rent a boat, and sailing to windward cannot be avoided, it can be very wise to lift anchor at dawn and to cover as many miles as possible before the wind starts. The wind does bring its advantages has around the shore line in Marmari the sea current remains a lot calmer than at Tingaki and its quite shallow so it’s the perfect environment for windsurfing. The resort does have a Windsurf school if you’ve never had the chance to learn. There’s also plenty of other beach related sports for you to enjoy or why not try horse riding. The local riding centre will take you for rides along the flat beach; this is not always popular with the locals. But if you want to live off tourism you have to put up with some inconveniences. As Marmari is such a quiet resort with most of the nightlife centred around the hotels the great bus service and its mid island location lends itself to you taking full advantage of visiting Kos Town with its great shops, bars, restaurants, clubs and fantastic tourist sites to visit such has the Asklepion and Embros Thermi. For a glimpse at the old Greece make sure you include a visit to Pyli. All of Marmari’s taverna's, shops including mini-mart etc are on one street. This is not a place your likely to get lost in, being quiet this is another resort popular with German visitors. The shoreline offers great views of Pserimos, Kalymnos and Turkey and they are all easily visited by catching a ferry from any number of ports on this side of Kos. This is the perfect resort for all but the consummate party animal. |
