| Kassiopi is situated approx 35km, in the north-eastern corner of the island. It stands in the foothills of Mt Pantokrator, approached from either side by scenic roads.
Kassiopi started life has a fishing village, first a pre-historic settlement then a Corinthian town. Its circular harbour and western headland attracted many foreign visitors. Then the Romans came and fortified it and built a castle making it their recreational centre long before the modern tourist. Roman visitors to Kassiopi are said to be Cato, Circero, Tiberius and even Nero on his way to the Games at Corinth. They built a temple to Zeus and also Jupiter Cassius where the town is said to get its name from, the remains of which can still be found beneath the church. The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Kassio pitra and possesses an icon of the virgin credited with miraculous powers. Thus making the village a place of pilgrimage long before Corfu's patron saint Spyridon.
The Roman castle was later destroyed by the Venetians only then to build there own the walls of which still encircle the crown of the hill. Kassiopi today is a working fisher port and bustling harbour especially early in the morning get a coffee in one of the many cafes and watch the world at work will you relax. The main street Kassiopitras doglegs from the coast road down to the harbour from where various paths lead to coves with pebble beaches. The main beach is pebble thou you will still find the obligatory sun loungers, parasols, toilets and showers. The area also lends itself to diving and there is a dive school.
For the less sport's minded the town has its fair share of tourist shops (it's reknowned for it's beautiful lace), there are a couple of mini-marts as well as daily ferry boats to Corfu's capital Kerkyra if shopping is your want. An array of cafes, restaurants and authentic taverna's await you when your mind turns to food.
Kassiopi nightlife has something to offer all from the big screen sport's bars, karoke and night clubs said by some to almost rival Kavos, then your small quiet bars and taverna's populated by Corfiots themselves thou you will always be given a warm welcome when you wander in. In fact in Kassiopi you will find an ever growing ex pat contingent as it is so very beautiful.
Well to sum up Kassiopi I believe its counts amongst the best destinations on Corfu with alittle of everything to other all ages. GIve it a try I don't think you'll be disappointed.
