Ipsos |
Ipsos is 14 km (approx. 9-miles) from Corfu Town and Corfu Airport, just north of Dassia. Ipsos and its neighbouring resort, Pyrgi, are situated on a wide, beautiful bay. The resort stretches for over a mile, alongside a narrow, gently sloping curved beach with crystal clear, clean water. Together they are classed has the Golden Mile.
About 10/15 years ago Ipsos was a massive favourite with young British visitors, who were seeking endless nightlife, it was a party resort frequented by Club 18-30's. Today you will find it has changed, though its still very lively. All manner of tourists choose Ipsos to holiday in, couples of all ages, families, and teenagers many on there first holiday abroad.
The main road runs through the shopping and disco strip, lining the inland side whilst the clear water and clean beach occupy the opposite side, the beach at Ipsos doesn't disappoint, it stretches along the roadside and gently curves round the harbour. The beach is a sand and shingle mix but very clean and tidy, with sun loungers and brollies for hire at a small charge. Ipsos beach is child friendly. The water shelves off gradually. The beach is flat and there are just a few steps in parts to get down to it. It has been granted an EU blue flag in recognition of the water's cleanliness. Parking is near by on the road and the curbs have lowered sections for wheelchair access. There no reported sea urchins so sea shoes can be left off.
Water sports like windsurfing and waterskiing are popular Ipsos holiday activities, Has are Water skiing, Ringo and banana rides and parasailing. Ipsos beach also offers water taxis to nearby beaches and boat trips (there are 2/3 boat hire firms at the harbour) are a popular way to admire the dramatic coastline or to reach Paxos, Antipaxos, Erikoussa or Kassiopi or Corfu Town, all of which offer an alternative to the full-on atmosphere of a holiday in Ipsos. To give you an idea of timings, a boat taxi to Barbati beach or maybe Agni will take approx. 40 mins by motor boat.
The far side of the beach closer to the harbour is the quiet part of the resort you will find a small quaint church at this end. If you do get bored with Ipsos beach take a look aroundIpsos village behind the main road, or venture out further with a hire car, visiting the quaint traditional Greek villages set in the hills behind Ipsos, such as Agios markos or Ano Korakiana. Or why not visit the highest point on Corfu, Mt Pantokrator.
There are generally very good facilities in Ipsos for the tourist, there are a good selection of Supermarkets and if you can't find what your looking for, Corfu Town is close by with larger stores. Food prices do tend to be cheaper in this area than the NE towns. Cash machines and Travel cheque exchange are available in the resort very much like home. There are also public Telephones which require a card, easily bought at local shops and supermarkets. And if you feel lost without Internet access there are a couple of Internet Cafes If you fancy a swim, but don't fancy a swim in the sea most Hotels and Apartments block which have one welcome the tourist to use them for the price of buying a drink. Also behind the main road theres a go-cart track and many bars have pool tables and games machines to while away a few hours.
Because of the size of the resort you will also find a 24 hour doctors clinic behind the main road. Though if its mosquitoe bites your suffering many shops have remedies the locals use which are very effective, to put you out of your misery. As in most resorts on Corfu, you will find a good selection of restaurants, tavernas, and cafes offering extensive menus of both authentic Greek, English, Chinese and many other nationalities. One with good feedback is The Viceroy a very well run Indian Restaurant.
When you get thirsty there is a a large variety of bars to choose from in Ipsos. Many have wide-screen TV showing films and sports.A few bars are particularly famous, B52 being one of them. Its a Corfu bar for all the party-people of the world, they organises various events every week, varying from the sunny beach partys, to the ultimate techno-raves till dawn, or special theme-evenings with music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. B52 is centrally located in Ipsos. Or you are welcome to join the party in one of the best bars on Corfu Lumberjacks, its also classed has one of the liveliest bars on Corfu. Powerful rhythms with dancing and merriment that go on until daybreak, highest quality drinks, exquisite cocktails, great atmosphere. The DJ and the unique decor assure that you will be utterly tranported and will stay up till the small hours. You will also find some of the most cosmopolitan bars on Corfu in Ipsos, one being the Old Tree, has been tastefully decorated by its owner. They have created an area where visitors can combine several activities according to the mood whether it be drinking, dancing or just having fun the Old Tree is a place you will want to visit again.
If you just want to relax and decide not to venture out of Ipsos, there is so much going on you will still have had a very enjoyable holiday and want to return. |
