| GOUVIA - SHINGLE/PEBBLE - SLOPING BEACH SAFE FOR CHILDREN
Perfect for those looking for sporty days and lively evenings.
Located on the east coast approx. 6 km from Corfu Town, opposite the Greek mainland. Gouvia is at the central point of an almost completely enclosed natural curved bay. Olive and citrus groves and lush hillsides lie to the west. Once a Venetian naval base, Gouvia now has a 274-berth yacht marina.
The main beach has a shallow slope into the sea, the centre of the beach is safer than the sides, but on the whole swimming is safe for children, but as always supervision would be advised.
Beach facilities include showers, toilets, sunbeds and brollies are available for a small charge and best for comfort on the pebbles.
Access to Gouvia beach is easy from anywhere in the village, and a circular walk can be made to and from the beach on a tarmac surface.
Due to the large bay shape and the shingle the beach can sometimes be covered in a little seaweed and there is also a possibility of urchins, so please be careful. Gouvia offers the usual beach activities including paragliding, diving and most water sports, or why not hire a boat and explore the many coves up and down the coast.
At one end of the beach you will find a ruined Venetian arsenal worth exploration. The resort has become one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island, with both a lively nightlife and quiet hillside spots.
Accommodation comprises a campsite, rooms, studios and, somewhat unusually for Corfu, theres a selection of larger holiday hotels. There are some good-value snack bars as well as Greek tavernas serving traditional fare, and an excellent selection of restaurants offering the cosmopolitan feel no doubt opened with those rich yacht owners in mind.
How to get there:
1. Blue Public Buses leaving from Sanrocco Square, Corfu Town every half hour. 2. With either Taxi, private/rented car its 15 minutes from Corfu town. |
