Benitses |
Benitses lies 12 km (approx 8 miles) from Corfu Town. The name comes from the Spring water (Pinisse) which flows from the mountains of Aghii Deka and Stavros and join together into two small rivers. The area is criss-crossed with footpaths, one such path will lead you to the Benitses water works. The old village of Benitses's is full of character and charm, it was as many Corfu resorts once the home to only a few fisherman. Today its full of tourists, though more favoured by couples, the area does retains its authentic colours and a very Greek atmosphere.
In the daytime the village acts as the meeting place for the local fishermen who set up stalls on the roadside from which they sell their fresh daily catch. Benitses restaurants range from fish tavernas, charcoal-grill tavernas and many restaurants serving a selection of international and Greek cuisine, creating a night time that is full of life. Benitses bars and nightlife range from traditional Greek coffee bars (kafeneion), bars serving meze (ouzerie), karaoke, beach coctail bars and pubs. But the main attraction is the Shell Museum, it has the best shell collection in Europe and exhibits all kinds, plus coral, shark's jaws and some very fasinating fish. Its in the last 20 odd years that the tourist industry in Benitses has taken over and become the main source of income for the local Greek population in the summer season. Before the occupation of the inhabitants was fishing, and cultivation of citrus crops, as the location was full of citrus trees, olive-oil production and in the operation of water mills on the mountainous part of the village.
Today the local's have begun to transform the image of Benitses, they have turned many night venues into shops and are vigorously enforcing a rule forcing bar and club owners to turn there sound equipment down after midnight. Benitses does still offer a variety of night life suitable for everyone, from the young and young-at-heart to families.
The beach is one of the cleanest on Corfu and has been awarded the EU blue flag. The waters are crystal clear and are perfect for a variety of water sports. Jetties and platforms have been built for swimmers and divers. Boat trips are available from the new harbour and a visit to close by Corfu Town is a must. The area is well served by Public transport or why not hire a car and go of exploring the rest of beautiful Corfu. |
