Andimachia the village or town is set alongside the Airport, it highlights the vast contrast’s you find on Kos between the old historical and religious sites and the modern Kos which has been born from the requirements of the tourist industry.
Antimachia is a traditional village, situated on a plateau not very high. It has some 2.200 permanent residents, occupied mainly in agriculture and tourism. It’s held its name for some 3000 years while many other places on Kos have been renamed. There are a few shops, tavernas just don’t expect to go clubbing here. However there are many fine places to eat, with the port of Mastihari close by fish dishes tend to top the menu.
There are many places worth seeing in and around the village, there’s the House of Antimahia, a traditional house which has been left in the style of the early 20th century. Opposite the house there’s an old traditional windmill, the Mylos tou Papa (meaning the priest’s mill) the only fully working windmill l left on Kos.
Some 4km to the north-east, along dirt track you see the ruins of a Medieval Castle, built in the 14th C. by the order of the Knights of St. John, who also dominated the neighbouring island of Rhodes. It holds within its ruined walls two old churches Aghios Nicolaos (14th C. and Aghia Paraskevi 18th C. both reasonably well preserved.
The local residents of Andimachri are renowned for their friendliness and their singing and dancing ability producing some of the best folk musicians in the whole of Greece. So try to time your visit for the carnival or one of the many Saints days which are celebrated. The two main religious feasts are 30th June Panighyri in honour of the Saint Apostles and 15th of August, in honour of the Assumption of Virgin Mary. But some important event’s of the village are the feast of Honey, which take’s place in late August; there be dancing, singing and you to taste the local honey, and the Wine Festival held in September which runs along the same theme basically enjoying what the Gods have blessed you with and having a good time.
The nearest port and beach are at Mastihari approx 4km, where you can catch a ferry to kalymnos. The beach is well organised for water sports, swimming and sunbathing. Don’t worry too much about how to get to the beach there is a regular bus service, or hire yourselves a car.
Rather than large hotels this area has Bed and Breakfast style accommodation which can make a pleasant change, so probably might not be the first chose for families, but the peace and quiet may suit the more mature couple.
