Agios Stefenos NW
Ag Stefenos NWAgios Stefanos (San Stefanos) is 45 km (approx. 30 miles) from Corfu Town and Airport. Its situated on the northwest coast, a small low key resort, which used to be a fishing village. Fishing is still very important to the local economy. In fact its possible to take a boat from the harbour to visit the islands of Kefalonia and Paxos, amongst others.

There is some outstanding scenery in this part of the island. San Stefanos is an excellent starting point for a number of walks, through the hills and olive groves taking in the breathtaking views of the coastline and local scenery, you have a beautiful view of the Diaontian Islands. The hills gently roll down to a 500m long, 70m wide and flat sandy beach that is fairly quiet even in the high season. The shallow water and gently shelving sands make this a particular favourite with families and ideal for children, there are also sunbeds and brollies for hire, showers and toilets which make a day on the beach more pleasant. A boardwalk runs the length of the back of the beach which at 70m deep is big by Corfu standards. The drawback is a slightly smelly stream that bisects the beach and cars that park right on the sands. The flat expanse and low cliffs give the resort a very English feel. There are watersports and as I've mentioned boat hire.

Indeed, San Stefanos being tucked away from the main traffic routes and only approached along narrow lanes the resort tends to be quieter than most. Though its very close to the resorts of Arillas, Sidari, Roda, Peroulades, and the picturesque village of Paleokastritsa which are all serviced by a bus service several times a day, but make sure you take the right bus, has there is another San Stefanos on the east coast if you fancy seeing a village that's not been touched by tourism visit Magoulades.

The accommodation in the area consists of mainly small family hotels and apartments. There are also a small selection of shops, couple of supermarkets, gift shops, jeweller's, a laundry and a bakery. And if your self-catering you will find at the local harbour about 10 minutes walk from the center you can buy fresh fish directly from the fishing boats as they come in early in the morning, delicious.

The resort has several good tavernas, a couple of bars which open late, and two small clubs, so take your dancing shoes with you.

Most tourists enjoy their holidays on Corfu, it is almost impossible not to, and I think we all say 'we will return'. San Stefanos must be almost unique in that 70% of the families and couples do return. The record at the moment is 25 years. That was before tourism, made up roads, apartments and all those trappings we see today. Many now return not so muchAg Stefenos NW as tourists but to meet old Greek friends and pick up as they left the year before. They feel secure and happy to be back in their second home.

There is no doubt that San Stefanos offers one of the best holidays in Greece, the friendlyness of the people, the gentle atmosphere and all San Stefanos has to offer has made it almost impossible for many to holiday elsewhere.
