| Agios Stefanos named after the local church, is approx 40km from Kos Town in the southwest.
This is yet another scenic Kos village taken over by tourism. Most of the golden sandy beach which stretches from Kamari seems to be owned by the hotels which line it; however as with the rest of Greece beaches are not privately owned they are there for all. So sun bath were ever you wish. There are a couple of beaches on Kos you might wish to avoid; those which have been commandeered by the Naturist brigade are highlighted in the beach section. This part of Kos is only 1km wide so you get the full effect of the Meltemia winds, which whip across the Aegean Sea probably a bonus in the height of summer. The two main features to visit in Agios Stephanos are the remains of a couple of well preserved triple-aisled 6th century basilicas. There are some excellent bird mosaics here but they are usually covered in sand whipped up by the wind. And the other is the small Island Kastri a solitary rock protruding from the sea which you can see from the shore line. Many people have fun swimming out to it. Be cautious only swim out if you’re a strong competent swimmer. If this is your holiday destination the nearest large resort for shops, restaurants and tavernas is Kefalos 4km in a north-easterly direction. Frequent buses travel there and Kos Town, or you could rent a car or motorbike. This resort would best suit a family or older couple who don’t wish to party till dawn. |
